Eligible businesses can enroll in Amazon’s Tax Exemption Program (ATEP) to purchase on Amazon Business completely free of sales tax. ATEP is available to qualifying businesses, nonprofits, government agencies and educational institutions. Once enrolled, sales tax exemptions are applied automatically at checkout – no manual refund requests needed. Enroll through Amazon Business account settings using the Tax Exemption Wizard. Tailride retrieves all your receipts whether or not ATEP is applied, so your records always reflect the actual amount paid.

The One Big Beautiful Bill of 2025 permanently restored 100% bonus depreciation and expanded Section 179 to a $2.5 million maximum deduction for tax years beginning after December 31, 2024. Equipment, computers, tools, furniture and other qualifying property purchased on Amazon Business and placed in service during the tax year can be immediately and fully expensed – rather than depreciated over multiple years. The Section 179 phase-out begins at $4 million in total qualifying purchases. Tailride retrieves the receipts needed to substantiate every qualifying purchase for your IRS filing.

Only the business-use portion of a purchase is deductible. If you buy an item on Amazon Business that is used partly for business and partly personally, you may only deduct the business-use percentage as an expense or apply Section 179 to that portion. Meals purchased via Amazon are 50% deductible when they are ordinary and necessary business meals. Entertainment expenses remain non-deductible under current IRS rules. Keep a brief contemporaneous note for any mixed-use purchase explaining the business purpose.

If you reimburse employees for Amazon Business purchases, structure payments under an IRS accountable plan to keep them tax-free for both parties. Under an accountable plan, employees must have a business purpose for the expense, provide an adequate record (receipt) within a reasonable period, and return any excess reimbursement. Tailride lets each employee retrieve and submit their amazon.com receipts promptly, keeping your accountable plan compliant and reimbursements flowing without delays.

Section 179 Equipment Expensing

Under the One Big Beautiful Bill’s expanded Section 179, US businesses can immediately deduct up to $2.5 million in qualifying equipment placed in service in 2025, with 100% bonus depreciation available on any remaining eligible basis. Sole Proprietors & Schedule C

Freelancers, consultants and sole proprietors file Schedule C with their Form 1040, deducting ordinary and necessary business purchases including Amazon Business supplies, equipment and subscriptions. Frequently Asked Questions

Amazon Business receipts for US taxes – your questions answered

Can I deduct Amazon Business purchases as business expenses?
Yes. Amazon Business purchases that are ordinary and necessary for your trade or business are fully deductible. Sole proprietors deduct them on Schedule C; C-corps on Form 1120; S-corps and partnerships on Form 1120-S or Form 1065, passing deductions through to owners. Only the business-use portion of a mixed personal–business purchase is deductible. Keep receipts – the IRS requires substantiation for all business expense deductions.
What is ATEP and does my business qualify?
ATEP (Amazon Tax Exemption Program) allows qualifying organisations to purchase on Amazon Business without paying state and local sales tax – applied automatically at checkout. Qualifying entities typically include tax-exempt nonprofits (501(c) organisations), federal, state and local government agencies, educational institutions, and some businesses that resell goods or use them in exempt manufacturing. Enroll through Amazon Business account settings using the Tax Exemption Wizard, which guides you through uploading your exemption certificate.
What are the 2025 Section 179 limits after the OBBBA?
The One Big Beautiful Bill of 2025 (OBBBA) expanded Section 179 for tax years beginning after December 31, 2024. The maximum deduction is $2.5 million, with a phase-out beginning at $4 million in total qualifying purchases. In addition, 100% bonus depreciation was permanently restored for qualified property acquired and placed in service after January 19, 2025. Common approach: use Section 179 up to your business income limit, then apply 100% bonus depreciation to any remaining eligible basis.
Does Amazon charge sales tax on Amazon Business purchases?
Yes, unless your business is enrolled in ATEP and qualifies for a sales tax exemption. Amazon collects and remits state and local sales tax in all US states that impose it. Rates vary by state – from 0% in Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire and Delaware, to over 9% in some jurisdictions. For businesses deducting purchases as expenses, the full amount paid – including any sales tax – is the deductible cost. For resellers who collect sales tax from their own customers, consult your CPA on whether to exclude the sales tax from your expense deduction.
Can I reimburse employees for Amazon Business purchases tax-free?
Yes, if the reimbursements are made under an IRS accountable plan. The employee must have a legitimate business purpose for the purchase, provide an adequate receipt within a reasonable time, and return any excess. Reimbursements under an accountable plan are not included in the employee’s W-2 income and are deductible by the business. Tailride lets employees retrieve their amazon.com receipts on demand so they can submit expense reports promptly.
Which accounting software works with Tailride for Amazon Business?
Tailride extracts date, amount, sales tax, item description and order number from every receipt. This data aligns with import fields in QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Self-Employed, Xero, FreshBooks, Wave and SAP Concur. Your bookkeeper can import receipts directly rather than re-entering data manually, and your CPA receives a clean, organised set of year-end records.
How long should I keep Amazon Business receipts for the IRS?
The IRS recommends keeping records for 3 years from the date you filed your return (or 2 years from when you paid the tax, if later). Keep records for 6 years if you underreported income by more than 25%. For property on which you claim depreciation, keep records until the period of limitations expires for the year you dispose of the asset. Tailride’s PDF downloads are valid IRS-substantiation documents and should be stored for at least 3 years from the filing date of the relevant return.
Does Tailride work for both business and personal Amazon accounts?
Yes. Tailride works separately on your Amazon Business account and any personal amazon.com accounts. Many sole proprietors and small business owners maintain separate accounts; Tailride lets you export receipts from each independently. If you use a single account for both business and personal purchases, use Tailride’s filters to identify business-related orders before preparing your Schedule C or corporate return.
